While most people's first thoughts when they hear the term "support" tend to center on donating money, the Save Our City Center focuses on programs that build up your family, friends, and neighbors through your involvement and time. Things like donating blood at your church, helping at a Special Olympics Event, running the Brentwood 5 K race on the 4th of July, or canoeing on the Allegheny River. We would also like to concentrate on one event a quarter to provide a focus for our Save Our city efforts. Our first choice for local programs is the Central Blood Bank. Something like million worth of blood products need to be purchased from other areas of the country each year. With so many of our family, friends and neighbors being helped, and with so many of our hospitals attracting patients from all over the world, this was an easy choice. (Besides that, I ran our blood drives at work for 7 years and always found them to be really nice people.) Our second choice is the Great Race, one of my all-time favorite local events. While the 5K is a little more my speed these days, I think there is something for everyone in this truely unique Pittsburgh celebration. Somewhere, Mayor Caligiuri is smiling broadly
